Australia

Watchmaking’s newest frontier

Australia is building a watch industry from scratch — and putting the outback itself inside the case.

A closer look: starting an industry from zero

Australia never had a watch industry to lose — which makes what's happening now genuinely new. Bausele, founded in Sydney in 2011 by Swiss-industry veteran Christophe Hoppé, made its name with a simple, brilliant idea: a hollow crown filled with a physical piece of Australia — red outback earth, beach sand, coral — on watches running Swiss movements.

The idea travelled. Bausele became the first Australian brand to exhibit at Baselworld in 2015, partnered with the Sydney Opera House, and in 2021 was commissioned to create the official centenary watch of the Royal Australian Air Force — the RAAF's first watch commission in seventy years.

The harder road is full local manufacture, and Sydney watchmaker Nicholas Hacko is walking it: after Swiss brands cut off spare parts to independent repairers in 2011, he set out to machine cases, plates and eventually whole movements in Australia — effectively founding Australian watch manufacturing as a one-workshop industry.

A young scene, but a determined one, with the national character stamped straight into the product. The pioneer brand is below.
