France blends watchmaking with jewellery and fashion, and holds a rich clock past — the rustic Comtoise, gilded ormolu mantel clocks and the perfected carriage clock.
France's role in watchmaking is bigger than its modern industry suggests. Paris was where Abraham-Louis Breguet — Swiss-born, but Parisian by workshop — invented the tourbillon (patented 1801) and half the vocabulary of fine watchmaking. And it was Cartier in Paris that created the first purpose-built pilot's wristwatch, the Santos of 1904, made so that aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont could read the time without letting go of his controls — arguably the moment the wristwatch became a man's object.
The industrial centre was Besançon, near the Swiss border, which at its peak made the great majority of French watches and ran its own observatory chronometer trials. Its flagship, Lip, was a household name for a century before collapsing in the 1970s — famously occupied and run by its own workers for a time, one of France's most storied industrial dramas.
The current revival is real. Pequignet in Morteau builds the Calibre Royal, a genuinely in-house French movement; Yema in Besançon has returned with its own calibres; Bell & Ross designs tool watches from Paris; and Besançon's observatory certification has been brought back for French-made chronometers. Alongside them, Michel Herbelin has quietly made watches in the Jura since 1947.
France's strength was never volume alone — it is the marriage of horology with design and fashion, from Cartier's Tank to today's Paris houses. The makers below cover both sides: the Besançon engineering tradition and the Parisian eye.
