Britain once led the world in precision timekeeping — solving longitude with Harrison's marine chronometers and inventing the longcase 'grandfather' clock. A modern revival is now thriving.

A closer look: Britain, the nation that solved longitude

For two centuries Britain simply was precision horology. John Harrison's marine chronometers solved the longitude problem in the 1700s and made global navigation possible; Thomas Mudge invented the lever escapement around 1755 — still the beating heart of nearly every mechanical watch made today; and by 1800 roughly half the world's watches were made in England.

That industry was lost in the nineteenth century to American mass production and Swiss flexibility — but its intellectual line never quite broke. George Daniels, working alone on the Isle of Man, invented the co-axial escapement and sold it to Omega in 1999, the first commercially significant new escapement in two centuries. His apprentice Roger W. Smith continues there today, hand-making a few dozen watches a year that collectors wait years to buy.

Around that summit, a genuine revival: Bremont has built real manufacturing in Henley; Christopher Ward proved a British brand could sell serious Swiss-made mechanics direct to consumers at honest prices; Fears of Bristol returned after decades dormant; Garrick machines and finishes in Norfolk.

British watchmaking today is small, but it is the small of a former giant — dense with history and disproportionately influential. The makers below are its current custodians.
