China is the largest producer of watches and clocks by volume, supplying movements and components worldwide. Alongside mass production it has a serious mechanical heritage and a growing design scene.
Modern Chinese watchmaking began as a state project. Tianjin's Sea-Gull factory produced China's first domestically made wristwatch, the Wuxing, in 1955; Shanghai and Beijing factories followed within three years. Beijing Watch Factory, founded 1958, went on to specialise in the hardest disciplines — tourbillons and enamel dials — and still makes them today at prices no Swiss house can approach.
By volume, China now dominates world watchmaking — the majority of all watches and movements on earth are made there, from Shenzhen's electronics lines to Sea-Gull's mechanical calibres, which power countless microbrands that never mention the fact. The interesting shift of the last decade is from anonymous supplier to named brand.
The proof came in 2021, when Shenzhen's CIGA Design won the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève — watchmaking's closest thing to an Oscar — the first Chinese brand ever to do so. Independents like Atelier Wen now build proudly ‘made in China’ watches with guilloché dials and Chinese design language, aimed at collectors rather than bargain hunters.
The old assumption — China assembles, Switzerland creates — is visibly out of date. The makers below run from the historic state factories to the new design-led independents.
