Spain hosts one of Europe's larger watch groups and a lively retail market across its cities.
Spain rarely gets called a watch country, yet Barcelona runs one of the largest watch groups in the world. In 1984 businessman Miguel Rodríguez, who had launched the Lotus brand a few years earlier, bought the old Swiss name Festina — and built around it a group that today sells millions of watches a year across Festina, Lotus, Calypso, Jaguar and Candino.
The empire runs deeper than its high-street brands. Festina Group also owns Swiss haute horlogerie house Perrelet (founded 1777 by the inventor of the self-winding pocket watch) and movement maker Soprod — meaning a Barcelona company quietly controls part of Switzerland's own supply chain. For over two decades Festina was also the official timekeeper of the Tour de France, stamping the brand on European sport.
Alongside the group, Viceroy has been a fixture of Spanish jewellers for generations. The national strength is honest, well-priced, well-distributed watches — Spain never chased haute horlogerie, and never needed to.
