Austria pairs Vienna's imperial clockmaking heritage with one of Europe's most admired independent workshops.
Nineteenth-century Vienna made some of the most precise clocks ever built. The Biedermeier-era Vienna regulators — slender, glass-cased wall clocks such as the Laterndluhr — kept time to within seconds a week using nothing but weights and a pendulum, and remain benchmarks for collectors of precision clockmaking. The imperial court kept its own watchmakers, Carl Suchy & Söhne among them, a name recently revived.
Austria's modern reputation rests on a husband-and-wife workshop in Carinthia. Richard Habring, while at IWC, co-developed the ingenious simplified split-seconds chronograph that made the rattrapante — watchmaking's most demanding chronograph complication — affordable for the first time; at Habring², he and Maria Habring now build it and their own in-house calibres in tiny numbers.
Habring² has taken home multiple prizes at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève — remarkable for a team you can count on your fingers — and their watches trade at a fraction of what equivalent complications cost from Geneva. Insiders' value, in the truest sense.
Austria will never rival its Swiss neighbour in volume; it doesn't try. What it offers is precision heritage and one of the best value-for-craft propositions in watchmaking, below.
