Standard time and military-grade watches

Canada organised the world's time — and still supplies watches to the armed forces of several nations.

A closer look: the nation that put the world on time

The world tells time on a Canadian system. In the 1870s railway engineer Sir Sandford Fleming, frustrated by every town keeping its own local time, championed the scheme of worldwide standard time zones that the 1884 International Meridian Conference effectively adopted — the 24-zone clock the entire planet lives by today.

Canada's flagship maker is built for harder duty still. Marathon Watch, founded in 1939 by Morris Wein, began supplying Allied forces in 1941 and never stopped: its watches are made to formal military specifications, with tritium gas tubes for permanent night legibility, and are issued to United States forces — designed in Canada, manufactured in its own Swiss facility in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

That makes Marathon one of the very few companies anywhere still producing true issued military watches rather than military-styled ones — a distinction collectors prize, since the models sold to the public are the same ones in service pouches.

Canadian horology, in short, is quietly foundational: it set the world's clocks and still equips its soldiers. The maker is below.
