The Czech Republic is home to one of Europe's most beloved national watch brands — born behind the Iron Curtain, thriving today.
Czech watchmaking was willed into existence. After 1945, with little horological tradition to build on, Czechoslovakia set up watch production in Nové Město nad Metují; the first prototypes appeared in 1954 under the name Spartak, and when serial production began in 1957 under the PRIM brand, Czechoslovakia became one of only about a dozen countries on earth capable of manufacturing wristwatches.
Under communism PRIM was effectively the only watch available — the old saying goes that there wasn't a single household without one. That ubiquity forged an attachment few brands anywhere enjoy: PRIM is less a logo than a piece of national memory, worn by presidents and railway workers alike.
The brand survived the transition to capitalism and decades of legal battles between two successor manufacturers — and in 2025 the dispute finally ended with the whole of PRIM united under one roof, combining the hand-made movements of the Nové Město manufacture with accessible lines from Frýdek-Místek.
Higher-end PRIM models still carry movements designed and built in the Czech Republic — a rarity at their prices anywhere in Europe. The official site is below.
