The Netherlands gave the world accurate timekeeping itself — and its modern independents still build watches that look to the sky.
Every accurate clock on earth descends from a Dutch idea. In 1656 Christiaan Huygens built the first pendulum clock, improving timekeeping accuracy overnight from a quarter of an hour a day to seconds; in 1675 he added the balance spring that still regulates mechanical watches today. No single nation contributed more to the physics of time.
That scientific streak survives in the Netherlands' two world-class ateliers. Christiaan van der Klaauw in Naarden is the only workshop anywhere devoted entirely to astronomical watches — its Planetarium carries the smallest mechanical planetarium ever made — and took the astronomy prize at the 2021 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève.
In Oldenzaal, brothers Bart and Tim Grönefeld — third-generation watchmakers in a family workshop dating to 1912 — hand-build movements whose steel bridges and inventive escapements have won multiple GPHG prizes, including for their 1941 Grönograaf chronograph. Collectors wait years for a delivery slot.
